What is manual cam tensioner?
Manual cam chain tensioners are designed to replace the automatic and hydraulic tensioners on high performance engines. The automatic adjusters can back out when the throttle is closed suddenly at high rpm. This allows the cams to go momentarily out of time, and can result in bent valves and/or serious engine damage.
How do you adjust an ape manual cam chain tensioner?
To set the tensioner adjustment, rotate the engine forward while screwing the tensioner bolt in. When you feel the engine tensioner parts (guide, rollers, etc.) make contact with the moving cam chain, back the tensioner bolt out 1/4 turn and tighten the jam nut.
Can you over tighten a cam chain tensioner?
It could cause fast cam chain and gear wear. It’ll also but a lot of stress on the cams. When you over tighten, typically you’ll hear it whine. What I normally do is tighten up the cam chain tensioner until the rattling is gone, then go about a 1/4 of a turn farther, then lock the locking nut down.
How tight should a cam chain be?
For me on as fresh chain it should have no slack but very slight tension. If you lightly tap it it should not flutter but not be rigid. It’s hard really to describe, it’s more of a feel thing. It will stretch a bit once it runs so you don’t really want to start out with it loose.
