What are WKY rats?

What are WKY rats?

The Wistar–Kyoto (WKY) rat strain has been proposed as an animal model of endogenous depression. Initially developed as the normotensive control strain for the spontaneously hypertensive rat, WKY was bred from the Wistar (Wi) strain in 1963 by Okamoto and Aoki.

What are Shrs?

Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR) The SHR is an inbred genetic model of experimental hypertension. Similar to human essential hypertension, multiple genes are involved in generating the blood pressure increase in the SHR.

What causes hypertension in rats?

In the rat, 2K1C hypertension is characterised by sharp increases in plasma renin activity due to the decreased renal arterial pressure in the clipped kidney, and increased circulating angiotensin II concentrations and blood pressure within 2–4 weeks.

What species are lab rats?

A laboratory rat or lab rat is a brown rat of the subspecies Rattus norvegicus domestica which is bred and kept for scientific research. While less commonly used for research than mice (see laboratory mouse), rats have served as an important animal model for research in psychology and biomedical science.

What are lab rats used for?

The laboratory rat has made invaluable contributions to cardiovascular medicine, neural regeneration, wound healing, diabetes, transplantation, behavioural studies and space motion sickness research. Rats have also been widely used to test drug efficacy and safety.

Is Hypertension a disease?

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.

What animal has high blood pressure?

Giraffe Facts The giraffe has one of the highest blood pressures of any mammal. It reaches pressures of up to 280/180 mm Hg, which is twice that found in humans (120/80 mmHg).

Do animals suffer from hypertension?

In humans, high blood pressure is usually considered primary, meaning there is no underlying disease causing it. In animals, primary hypertension is unusual; there almost always is another disease causing it and if routine screening does not identify the problem, more tests may be in order.

What is the characteristics of rat?

The rat has short hair, a long naked tail, rounded erect ears, protruding eyes, a pointed snout with long whisker (vibrissae) and five toes on each foot.
