What causes a blocked gully?
If it’s an indoor blockage, it could have occurred because of heavy materials or objects being flushed down the drain. Overflowing drains are often caused by sanitary products, paper towels or other hard to flush materials which can clog pipes and obstruct drains. If installed correctly a drainage field for effluent should last for around 25 years as a minimum. A rainwater soakaway should last for far longer as long as the gutters are regularly cleaned and filtered.
Can drains unblock themselves?
In some cases, drains can unblock themselves depending on the nature of the blockage. For example, if your drain has become blocked due to tree root ingress, it will not be able to unblock itself (and require an engineer to conduct a CCTV drain survey to assess the problem and identify a solution).
